Choosing a Marketing Agency: Questions to Ask Before You Sign

A practical, no-fluff checklist for evaluating a marketing agency before a contract — the questions that reveal how the work will actually get done.

Choosing a Marketing Agency: Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Most agency pitches sound similar: strategic, data-driven, results-focused. The words rarely differentiate one agency from another. What actually predicts whether an engagement will go well is a short list of concrete, specific questions — and how directly the agency answers them.

Who actually does the work?

Ask directly whether the strategist in the pitch meeting is the same person who will be involved when the platform is built, or whether the work gets handed to a subcontractor after the contract is signed. "100% in-house" and "zero vendor handoffs" are strong signals — but they're only meaningful if the agency can name the actual team members doing each part of the work.

What does success get measured against?

An agency worth hiring should be able to describe, before the project starts, what a custom dashboard reporting against revenue pipeline would look like for this specific business — not a generic template of impressions and click-through rates.

How long does the actual build take?

For context: a standard business website generally takes two to four weeks once content and approvals are in, and larger platforms or event technology projects take longer depending on the integrations required. A timeline that's dramatically shorter than that for comparable scope is worth questioning; one that's vague or unwilling to commit to a range is a bigger warning sign.

What happens after launch?

Confirm whether hosting, SSL, backups, analytics, and ongoing maintenance are included, or whether the relationship effectively ends at launch. Growth doesn't stop at go-live, and a good agency's process shouldn't either — campaigns should keep running, dashboards should keep reporting, and the plan should keep adjusting against real numbers well after the initial build is done.
